Sustainable living, green living, eco-conscious are no longer ideas being bandied about, but are concepts that have become ingrained in the public’s mind as the need to preserve our planet and conserve natural resources grows more urgent every day. As people’s awareness deepens they are making sound environmental choices to go natural with organic products that are as much about global concerns as about personal philosophy and ascetics.
Environment Furniture north of Union Square is a paragon of this type of environmental stewardship. Using sustainable products from reclaimed, recycled, and responsibly harvested wood to design organic furniture, is one factor that gives Environment a unique edge in the marketplace. Their motto, “Create Beauty, Respect the Planet,” is realized in a beautifully crafted collection of beds, tables, cabinets, and accent pieces that combine a historical sense with a sophisticated, contemporary look for original, timeless pieces.
The Peroba Collection named for the reclaimed wood from Parana, Brazil, is secured from abandoned buildings and barns that date back 70 to 100 years. Peroba Rosa hardwood, rich in color and texture, is coupled with harvested mahogany from Indonesia where the furniture is manufactured and North American white oak and polar that the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) has certified.
Although many pieces have a weathered, rustic quality, non-toxic stains in ebony or cherry provide high luster to select pieces. The collection is diverse, constantly evolving as newer raw materials are identified, and has special appeal to interior designers, architects, and eco-shoppers. Also available at Environment are sofas and low, reclining seating upholstered in organic fabrics, including material from a recycled army tent and felt from the environmentally progressive textile company Mahram.
Associated with several conservation groups, Environment is a member of and works closely with the Tropical Forest Trust (TFT,) a prominent global nonprofit organization in the UK dedicated to forest conservation programs, and is listed in TIME: The Green Design 100. Besides answering environmental concerns, the Environment Furniture’s showroom is like eye candy—the furniture is great looking!
