While today’s Kentucky Derby is all about the boys (this year anyway), Friday’s prestige race, the Kentucky Oaks, was all about the girls – both horses and humans.
The Kentucky Oaks is the companion race to the Derby and just as old; 137 years to be exact. It’s a race for three-year-old fillies, has a signature flower, the Stargazer Lily and its own official cocktail, the Oaks Lily, a concoction of Vodka, Sweet and Sour Mix, Cranberry Juice and Triple Sec.
Since 2006, the Kentucky Oaks also has an official dress code. You can wear anything- as long as it’s pink! As you can see, the dress code was rigorously enforced. And because the day was all about females, the Oaks is also a partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Horses for Hope, donating a portion of the ticket sales to the fight against breast cancer.
And the winner of the Kentucky Oaks? The aptly named Plum Pretty.
