Natural Dog Treats—Cooking for Woman’s Best Friend

My Chihuahua-Terrier mix Martini is not only one of the cutest dogs I’ve ever seen, but he’s the longest relationship I’ve ever had. And to keep him around for a long time, I only feed Martini the best quality food and natural dog treats.

For a quick treat, I give my little dog bananas, cheese, peanut butter, yogurt or a teaspoon of coconut oil. And, your furry friends would love leftovers of rice, sweet potatoes, chicken, salmon and cooked carrots. But, if you have some more time and want to pamper man’s best friend, here a few natural dog treat recipes.

Meatballs

- 1 package of chopped turkey, chicken or beef (usually a pound)

- 1 egg

- 1 Tablespoon chopped parsley (or more to taste)

- ½ cup of shredded cheese

Directions: Mix all ingredients and shape into meatballs. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and cook for about 10 minutes. Let cool and serve or freeze for later date.

Cottage Cheese Treats

- 2/3 cup cottage cheese

- ½ cup milk

- 6 Tablespoons flaxseed oil

- 1 egg yolk

- 4 cups of oatmeal

Directions: Mix all ingredients and shape into balls or spoon into small cupcake/muffin tin. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and cook for about 30 minutes. Let cool and serve.

Apple Cakes

- 4 cups flour

- 1 Tablespoon baking powder

- 2 ¾ cups water

- ¼ cup applesauce

- 1 egg

- 4 Tablespoons honey

- ½ Teaspoon vanilla

- 1 cup skinned apple

Directions: Mix wet and dry ingredients separately. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Pour mixture in cupcake/muffin tin. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and cook for about an hour and 15 minutes. Let cool and serve.

Feel free to experiment with the recipes and add more veggies or meat where needed. You could even add mint for fresh breath, rosemary to soothe the stomach or garlic to prevent fleas. I often say that Martini eats better than most humans, so you might find yourself snacking on these treats with your doggie!

As always, it’s best to check with your veterinarian before making changes in your dog’s diet. The above recipes have been modified from the Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog co-written by a veterinarian.

  1. My dog loves bananas; add a little peanut butter and he’s in heaven. I am going to make these treats for him; he seems tired of store bought dog biscuits.
