Stalled on the Runway? Pack Surprises for the Kids

Okay, it`s time for a trip and the kids are really excited. So are you! You pack, make plans, get to the airport — or train station or bus terminal — and the waiting begins to “take off.” Everyone`s got the best of intentions but a couple hours go by and not only are the kids getting restless, so are you!

That`s when you whip out the surprise! You see, before your trip take a little time to wander around the dollar store or the stationery department of your local pharmacy or food market. Look for inexpensive “stuff” that will be fun for the kids, especially when they just need something to change their mood. It could be a package of gold stars or stickers. I could be one of those multi-color pens or a pack of colored pencils or markers. How `bout a spiral notebook … a couple of them of varying sizes? What about an activity book with dot-to-dot games and mazes? Or, you might see Silly Putty or some kind of play dough. Next buy some bright, character-designed gift wrap and take it all home to wrap each individual item.

You know what I`m suggesting, right? Tuck each little present in your handbag or carry-on bag and, just when you think your child is begging for a change of pace, surprise him. A present? For me? And if the gift wrap is fun, spend a minute looking at that, too.

Your motto just might be …. I`ll never go on a trip without one … a surprise present, that is!
