Inglot Cosmetics held a cosmetics tutorial at its studio space at Chelsea Market last week. It was an informative and intimate session and I was one of ten women getting a step-by-step tutorial by resident makeup artist Brooklyn and model Allix Hannah on how to go from “office appropriate” to “nightclub chic” with just a few clever strokes of the brush. Brooklyn took us down the cosmetic rabbit hole to transform Allix’s natural look to one with dark sultry eyes and bold lips. Along the way, I picked up some valuable tips about applying makeup that are useful for just about anyone.
Brooklyn used a simple blush with a bit of gold shimmer to it to enhance Allix’s cheekbones. He began his application of the blush right where the ear meets the hairline, then brushes towards the center of the face, and then back up to the starting point. “You never want it to look like you have a sinus infection so keep color as far away from the nose as possible.” Starting your blush line on the apple of the cheek is a common misconception, a mistake leading to an unwanted blotchy look. Never deposit color on the apple of the cheek first, Brooklyn advised us. If you feel you need that extra burst of color, then put a little blush on the apple of the cheek after initial application and once the majority of blush is off the brush. Blush-Face Blush $12.
Brooklyn really went for a smokey look on Allix’s eyes, and to achieve that one must never forget that Q-Tips are your very best friend. Always have a few on hand with a bottle of makeup remover to take care of any excess makeup and mistakes. Even the best of the best of makeup artists will make errors when working with eye liners and shadows. It’s impossible not to! So, make sure your BFF has your back to help you avoid those undesirable raccoon eyes (unless you are going for that punk-rock look).
For Allix’s daytime eyes, Brooklyn used the AMC eyeliner gel, a gel that goes on with accurate precision and with an opaque finish. You want to give your brush a nice twist to bring it to a fine point prior to applying this liner. It’s a great look for the daytime as long as you go easy on the eye shadow; it’s perfect for those who want to be a little edgy but can’t or don’t want to take it too far. Brooklyn applied the gel liner using the bottom center of the eye as a starting point, but told us that whatever works best with your hand is how you want to operate your liner application process. The best part about the AMC Eyeliner gel is the fact that you can use it in your waterline, and once dry, it stays put! AMC Eyeliner Gel $12.
And for evening, Brooklyn used Inglot’s jumbo eye pencil to add a smoldering evening look (above). Inglot’s jumbo pencils are not as precise as the gel, but their soft smudgy texture makes them perfect for creating dramatic nighttime eyes. AMC Eye Pencil $11.
To make Allix’s baby blues pop, he used a bit of purple for daytime. For evening he stepped it up while staying in the purple family, delving into deeper and darker shades. It’s a good idea to use color hues that compliment your eye color. In general, blue tones compliment brown-eyed beauties, while browns and shades of lavender make green eyes dazzle.
Can You Kiss A Hologram?
To take Allix’s lips from day to night, he took a deep color lip liner to draw a little V shape spawning from the outer corners of her lips. Using a lip brush, he then blended that color into that of a lipstick he used. To finish off, he used an AMC holographic lip gloss, a product that creates a multifaceted shine. When Allix turned one way, her lips appeared hot pink, another way purple. Often when combining a gloss with a lipstick it will dim the intensity of the lipstick, but this gloss actually works with the lipstick rather than against. In addition, it gives the illusion of a fuller look without the burning and stinging that comes with using a lip plumper. AMC Lip Gloss $15.
As a summer treat, Inglot is offering one-on-one consultations with your Inglot Cosmetics purchase of $100 or more. One of their makeup artists will take you step by step through one of the following tutorials: Smokey Eyes, Day To Night Look, Contour & Highlight, or Flawless Complexion.
