As the week before Labor Day begins, you’re probably asking yourself, “Where the heck did the past three or four months go?” Summer is coming to a close and while for some it might just mean making a change in wardrobe and moving certain activities indoors, for some (present company included) it means packing up and moving back to college campuses or getting back into the schoolwork state of mind.
We here at Woman Around Town have spent the summer roaming around the city, tracking fun and exciting (sometimes free) things to do. So while you’re trying to figure out how to end the summer with a bang, here are some suggestions of things you should do before summer’s end.
See an interesting exhibit at a museum. New York is home to an abundance of museums of all kinds and… shapes too. As always, exhibits come and go but if you do a little research you may find something you don’t want to miss! Our suggestions—Matisse at the Museum of Modern Art and Big Bambu at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Go to the beach. Or more specifically, the Jersey Shore. It’s not too late to get that last bit of fun in the sun. In fact, your experience might be a bit more pleasurable now that temperatures aren’t hitting a hundred degrees. And don’t worry about guidos. New Jersey native, Kelley Grover explains that real Jersey Shore patrons are nothing like the ones on MTV.
Do some unconventional shopping. While the fall fashions are taking over the racks in stores, you can still stock up on some last minute summer items for next year. This summer we explored an unexpected way of shopping, from street vendors. Read about the journey to buy a complete outfit from the vendors in Shopping Around.
Go see a movie in the park or at the pier. New York Parks and Recreation as well as various sponsors have been hosting free movie screenings at various parks and piers around the city all summer. While it is the end of August and you may have missed a showing of your favorite movie, screenings are still going on at certain locations now through October. See our story in Filming Around and check out the Big Apple Small Wallet blog that continues to update when and where movies are being shown.
Check out a new restaurant or bar. The summer nights are starting to cool down and it’s perfect for checking out a new restaurant (perhaps with outdoor seating) or bar. Sue Wiker wrote a piece on some places with great specials on weekdays. Check it out in our Dining Around section.
See a show. Whether it’s something on or off Broadway that you’ve heard rave reviews about or a comedy performance, you can never go wrong with a good show. We have reviewed many in Playing Around, including Secrets of the Trade, on stage through September 4. Read Alix Cohen’s review.
Finish one last good summer reading book. There’s just enough time for one or two more books this summer. If you’re looking for suggestions then see what we’ve been reading in Reading Around. Lina Zeldovich reviews Overexposed, Lauren Rhodes reviews Platinum, and Carissa Chesanek recommends When Heaven Calls. And if you have a tween and want to check out which books are appropriate, read MJ Hanley-Goff’s story on the helpful website, The Literate Mother.
While we hope that your summer has been an eventful one, it’s not to late to do a few more things. As the saying goes, “There’s no time like the present!”
