WET’s LOVE Benefit Is A Big Hit!

index.php

Spring produces many fundraisers for wonderful causes. Few events, however, are as much fun as the Women’s Expressive Theater’s yearly LOVE Benefit, where one-act plays by up-and-coming women writers are performed by stars. This time around we had the pleasure of seeing Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married), Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live), Carla Gugino (Watchman), Mamie Gummer (Mr. Marmalade), Hamish Linklater (The New Adventures of Old Christine), Ron Livingston (Time Traveler’s Wife), Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock), Zacahry Quinto (Heroes), and Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein). The plays were penned by Megan Mostyn-Brown, Julia Cho, Laura Eason, Sarah Treem, Susanna Fogel, and Joni Lefkowitz.

WET’s mission is to provide opportunities for women in the entertainment industry, so it seemed fitting to give awards to two women who are not only successful but also are eager to help others. The We Empower Together Award was presented by screenwriter and director Nora Ephron to Lynda Obst, who has produced many films, including Sleepless in Seattle. The Risk Taker Award went to Maria Zuckerman, vice president for HBO Films. The award was presented by Alexandra Campos, a young women who told how she had been empowered by WET’s Risk Takers program.

WET’s founders, Victoria Pettibone and Sasha Eden, this week’s Women Around Town (see story), opened the evening with welcoming remarks. After the award presentation and the plays, the enthusiastic audience enjoyed music, dancing, cocktails, and a buffet supper. What a way to welcome spring and recognize women in entertainment. Bravo!
