Supermodel Christy Turlington Burns had a complication during her first pregnancy and set out to learn about maternal health in other countries. She discovered a global tragedy of women dying needlessly in pregnancy and childbirth. Her film, No Woman, No Cry, tells the stories of four women in four parts of the world—a remote Maasai tribe in Tanzania, a slum in Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States. On Monday, May 9, Turlington Burns and Dr. Christiane Northrup will be honored in an event hosted by Ricki Lake. Concert for a Healthy Birth will feature performances by a stellar group of Broadway stars, all to raise money for Choices in Childbirth, a leading national advocacy organization for maternity care and women’s health.
Tickets are available to the public by going to the Choices in Childbirth website. The festivities will be held at the Canal Room, 285 West Broadway, beginning with the Red Carpet at 6:45 p.m., live performances at 7:30 p.m., and a dance party and reception at 8:45 p.m.
Those scheduled to perform include: Ricki Lake; Josh Gad, Book of Mormon; Christopher Hanke, How to Succeed in Business…; Rebecca Jones, American Idiot; Alysha Umphress, American Idiot; John Hill, Hairspray; Natalie Joy Johnson, Legally Blonde; Elizabeth Stanley, Million Dollar Quartet; and Storm Large.
Turlington Burns’ film, her directorial debut, will premier on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, on Saturday, May 7.
