HIV/AIDS has killed more than 20 million people in Africa. In 2002, with the cost of treatment equaling $10,000 per year, only 50,000 of the 29 million affected people in Sub-Saharan Africa could get treated. Today–with private contributions, increased political support and help from global health organizations–ARV drugs cost approximately 40 cents per day, and more than three million people in Africa are now getting treatment. The Lazarus Effect documents the stories of those who came from near death to a more stable lifestyle due to this change. The Lazarus Effect debuts on HBO 9pm ET/PT on May 24.
