Love, Loss, and What I Wore Calls It a Wrap

One hundred and twenty actresses—from Jenny Allen to Kim Zimmer—have appeared in the Off Broadway hit, Love, Loss and What I Wore, which opened at the Westside Theatre on October 19, 2009, and broke all box office records, recouping its entire investment in just eleven weeks. On March 15, the play will mark its 1,000 performance, and will close on March 25.

The play explores the relationship women have with their clothes, the memories the garments trigger of good times, bad times, sweet times, bitter times, loves won, and loves lost. The evening, best attended with a group of female friends, never fails to cause emotional reactions, best discussed after the curtain over dinner or a few glasses of wine.

The Off Broadway hit, written by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron, directed by Karen Carpenter is based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman. The production was honored with a 2010 Drama Desk Award and a Audience Award. From its first performance, Love, Loss, and What I Wore has been collecting audiences’ donated purses and accessories for Dress for Success and has contributed more than $125,000 to the organization. The show’s reach has not been limited to New York. Since Love, Loss, and What I Wore opened, audiences around the globe have gotten the chance to experience it. The show has played on six continents, in places including: Cape Town, South Africa; The Philippines; Paris, France; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Sydney, Australia; Toronto, Canada and many more. Los  Angeles’ Geffen  Theatre  and  Chicago’s  Broadway  Playhouse  both  hosted  extended  runs,  and the show is currently in Detroit, Michigan (through March 4) as part of the national tour.

“Being  able  to  share  the  intimate  collection  of  stories  in  Love, Loss, and What I Wore with audiences all over the world, and see it find its place  in  the  cultural  landscape,  has  been  incredibly  fulfilling,”  said Producer Daryl Roth. “I  am  very  proud  of  how  many  women  this  production  has  touched  – both on stage and off. We have had 32 rotating casts, and 120 actresses have participated during our New York run. The emotional  resonance  and  personal  connection  people  have  to  this  show  has  been  overwhelming.”
