Nora York at Joe’s Pub Sunday, November 21

Nora York’s singing has been described as “ingenious…radical…extravagant” and she will be performing at Joe’s Pub at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 21, featuring Jamie Lawrence on piano, Dave Hofstra on bass, Peter Grant on drums, and with some surprising guests. Others have characterized York as a combination of Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Jane Silberry, and Norah Jones. Her shows are never predictable, always creative, and because she has the stuff to pull it off, each performance becomes an event that will be written about and talked about long after the lights have dimmed.

A composer and professor (she teaches Creative Voice at the Tisch School of Drama at New York University), York has received two New York State Council on the Arts Composers’ Commissions, including one to complete Jump, her artistic response to Puccini’s Tosca. Jump is currently in development at The Public Theater in New York for a January 2011 premiere in the Under the Radar Festival. York collaborates on Jump with playwright David Greenspan, director JoAnne Akalaitis, artist Kiki Smith, and composer/arranger James E. Lawrence. (She also appears in the work).

To say that York is multitalented is an understatement. This is one talent you won’t want to miss.
