The Vampire Diaries is all about the living, the dead and the one spirit who’s trapped in between the two. For that main character, it’s time to finalize the deed; accident or not. This is the cliffhanger the CW series left fans with for the entire summer break!
The car swerves off Wickery Bridge, hitting the water and sinking to the bottom. A girl makes the ultimate sacrifice. She decides the unconscious boy with her should be saved first. But time isn’t on her side in this instance. Her mind begins to slip away until a memory illustrates another tragic fate. The memory of how her parents died the same way. It isn’t what she expects. Her father had also made the exact sacrifice years before to save her life.
With one last breath, her lungs fill up with water. But this time, there’s a difference. After all she has done to keep her mortality, Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is now in transition. She has a twenty-four hour window of momentary limbo. Her choices: officially die or become immortal as a vampire.
This is where The CW’s The Vampire Diaries will begin its fourth season.
In the course of two hundred years, the small town in Virginia called Mystic Falls, has gone through a drastic transformation. In the 1800s, all vampires were killed. Only a few escaped the fire. Two of those escapees eventually come back to their hometown—brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley). What they didn’t prepare for was the sight of a familiar face. But Elena Gilbert isn’t the same reckless vampire girl who gave the brothers immortality. Elena is a Petrova Doppelgänger—A descendent from the Petrova Family bloodline, one of her descendents being one hundred and forty-five year old Katherine Pierce which explains the stunning resemblance. This spins many of the relationships in Mystic Falls around. Katherine pretends to be Elena numerous times tricking everyone, especially the Salvatore brothers. And once word travels of a human doppelgänger, new wicked creatures want Elena’s blood for their own use.
Both Stefan and Damon’s mutual agreement to protect the human they both love, keeps Elena safe but also causes conflict. If a guy’s shimmery eyes, charming attitude and comedic innuendos aren’t easy traits to resist, imagine that multiplied by two. Elena’s relationship with Stefan is that of a pure bond. They have an emotional link hard to disconnect. But her friendship with Damon is difficult to deny. Even though he does the unimaginable, she can’t allow herself to abandon all ties to him. Damon challenges everything about who she is and that is a desirable characteristic she likes but probably won’t admit to Damon. He’ll think too highly of himself as usual. Her love for Stefan came first (to her knowledge), but what will happen if she decides to complete the vampire transition? Will Damon’s blood influence her desires to want him rather than Stefan?
Much of Elena’s daily struggles are of keeping her family and friends from unnatural death. In spite of such efforts many friends and acquaintances are lost: Vicky Donovan—killed after becoming an out of control vampire. Caroline Forbes—killed by Katherine so Caroline would become a vampire for Katherine’s own personal vengeance. In order to complete the hybrid process, Klaus (Joseph Morgan), uses Jenna Sommers (Sara Canning), by ending her life. Most recently vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis) lost the battle to his darker ego.
Alaric did manage to rid Mystic Falls of hybrid (vampire & werewolf) Klaus; or did he? The second best part of season three’s finale involved Bonnie Bennett’s (Kat Graham) witchy spell. Klaus will certainly have an amusing time deceiving all his enemies in town since his spirit is now possessing werewolf Tyler Lockwood’s (Michael Trevino) body. Not even a stake made from a rare White Oak Tree can keep an Original vampire from permanent death. And the only one who knows of his mere existence is Bonnie.
With all the vampires in command of the historic town, there’s no need to worry. The residence of the Mystic Falls can totally protect themselves from all non-animal blood-drinking vampires. If you’re thinking of garlic, that’ll get you killed. However, wearing or drinking the purple-top Verbena (Vervain) herb, will keep vampires from compelling you and weaken their heighten abilities. Unfortunately it isn’t easy locating the herb, so do yourself a favor and avoid that one gorgeous man with striking emerald eyes. Executive Producer Julie Plec says Damon Salvatore might be back to his bad boy ways in season four. YES!
Season four premieres October 11th at 8 p.m. on The CW.
