Feeling chilly this winter? Has the lack of sunshine and beach volleyball really started to get to you? The best way to lighten up this dark time of year is to curl up to a funny book, with plenty recently released by some of the most popular comedians on television now. Bossypants by Tina Fey
1 million out of 1 million stars! This book is beyond hysterical—you will literally have a stronger abdomen after reading this from laughing so much.
If you’ve seen 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live, or Mean Girls, then you know Tina Fey is funny. What’s great about this book is that you learn how she became so funny, and feel close to Fey as if you’re two best friends. I can’t help but express my new found adoration for Fey; aside from being funny, she’s smart, caring, intuitive, extremely busy, and holds it all together. She’s what most modern women aspire to be and is able to make fun of herself.
I want to be you, Tina Fey!
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) By Mindy Kaling
Known most widely for her role as Kelly Kapoor on the American version of The Office, Mindy Kaling is a Tina Fey in the making with an Indian twist. Though her character Kelly is known for her love of shopping and often brainless comments, Kaling is an intellectual writer. Having attended private school in the Boston area and Dartmouth for college, Kaling worked hard and I’m sure she will continue to rise in her career.
Some of the funniest parts of this book are stories about her childhood, such as her experiences with summer camp. From a deeper perspective, it’s also enjoyable to read this book from a feminist point of view. Kaling makes fun of the fact that dieting is a hobby for her and states openly that she’s a size 8 (so normal!). Though her humor is non-stop, I couldn’t stop thinking how great of a role-model she is for young and older women alike.
Hope to see more shows from you in the future, Mindy! And more books too!
This is a Book by Demetri Martin
The lone male-authored work in my “Top Three Funny Books I Read This Winter” list, This is a Book is less autobiographical than Fey and Kaling’s and is more of a collection of creative lists and fictional short stories.
Known for his unique stand-up routines that use drawings and flip charts, Demetri Martin’s writing style includes one-liners, jokes that keep giving, and funny lists, staying true to his style. One gem: ““Yes” actually means “No” 100 percent of the time, when the question is “Can I give you some advice?”” Short stories in the book include a clever one about Socrates getting a publicist, among others. I didn’t feel that I knew Martin any better after reading his debut book (which was certainly not a novel like Fey’s and Kaling’s) but his humor was fresh and creative, and the book was a fun quick read on a plane ride.
So put away those Girl Who Did Something Crazy books and prepare to laugh for an afternoon!
