Art Glass with Strength and Whimsy

Schalw with Fish Blue

Master Glassmaker Stanislaw Borowski and his family fled Poland for Germany in 1983. Already known for his unique engravings and glass sculptures, Borowski achieved wider recognition enabling him to set up the privately owned Glass Studio Borowski with his two eldest sons, Wiktor and Pawel six years later. Stani Jan Borowski joined his father and brothers in 2005. The company creates one of a kind “sculpture”: The Artist Editions, a Studio Line including multiples of functional and decorative glass, and striking, often playful, weather resistant pieces for the Outdoor Collection. With a reputation for strong, bright color and unique configuration, the Borowskis have exhibited widely. The work is owned by discerning international collectors as well as fine, art glass museums. Everything is handmade.

Blown Glass, using metal rods, hand tools, and a furnace is one of the most traditional and familiar processes. Flame-Worked Glass is a more detailed and close-up variety of this method. Here, the artist sits on a work bench allowing greater control. Cast Glass starts with a mold out of sand or plaster and silica which is then filled with molten clear, colored or patterned glass. Large scale pieces are generally created this way. Stained Glass is like a design puzzle of pieces soldered together. One can make Etched Glass either by applying an acid-resistant pattern which is dipped into a solution, or by engraving or sandblasting a design using wheels. These are just the most common techniques.

Because of an unusually deep generational contribution, a combination of older artisanal techniques learned by Stanislaw, modern approaches acquired as the three and then four men broadened their knowledge and exposure, and experimental methods developed in-house are utilized in conjunction. A wealth of experience and imagination is behind every piece of exceptional craftsmanship. Additionally, Wiktor counts emotion as one of the prime ingredients to Borowski glass.

Can you imagine growing up surrounded by the laws of fire, literally breathing life into art? The excitement of watching shapes form, ephemeral colors attain permanence …under your own increasing control? What must it feel like to direct the path of light, its strength and dissolution? To have a choice whether to construct with transparent, translucent or textured components? To reach agreement with material you cannot simply put your hands on to effect? Men in the Borowski family share passion and respect. They have found, as Joseph Campbell advises, their “bliss.”

“Glass is pure fascination for us. This unique material lives with light and offers particular characteristics like no other medium. The play of light, shape and color …inspire us every day in a new way. Our greatest source of inspiration is the pure joy of life…”
