As the time left until Christmas dwindles down, we turn once again to some of the outstanding children’s books available this season. Why not buy a gift adults can enjoy reading, too?
At the top of my list is JACKIE’S GIFT, an utterly charming story about what it means to be a neighbor, to be tolerant, and to have the true spirit of the holiday. Written in an engaging manner by Sharon Robinson, daughter of the great Dodgers’ second baseman Jackie Robinson, this is a holiday themed book that is appropriate for any time of year. These words by the author close the book “…I hope our story will inspire families for generations to come to look beyond race and religion and into people’s hearts.” There’s just no better way to say it.

Although it’s not being marketing as a book for Young Adults, I’m recommending THE SNOW GLOBE, by Sheila Roberts, as good reading for the whole family. Set in the gloomy Pacific Northwest (hello, “Twilight” fans), it’s the story of an antique that has given hope to those most in need down through the centuries. When heroine Kiley Gray finds herself out of a job, and with an ex-boyfriend who dumped her for her sister, she takes a leap of faith and buys the expensive trinket. What happens next makes this little book the perfect gift for anyone who’s feeling a little down at this time of year.
LEO THE SNOW LEOPARD is a true story about a little cub who lost his mother, but was saved and nurtured by caring people of several nations. Juliana Hatkoff, Isabella Hatkoff, and Craig Hatkoff take us step by step through the efforts of first a local goat herder, then Pakistani officials, and finally, the Bronx zoo. Excellent gift for animal lovers of any age.

Cassandra Clare’s bestselling series “City of Glass,” “City of Ashes,” and “City of Bones” is now available in a packaged set called THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS. Teens will relish this Young Adults book filled with vampires, sacrifice, and adventure.
Part Harry Potter, part “Twilight,” THE FLEDGLING HANDBOOK 101, by P.C. Cast, tells us what we need to know to go from Human to Fledgling. The “vampyres” on your list will totally get it.

Blue Balliett’s fans eagerly await the arrival of her new books, and THE DANGER BOX is no exception. This YA mystery concerns a girl who feels she doesn’t belong, a missing father, and a fire. A fine follow up to “Chasing Vermeer.”
Jon J. Muth’s ZEN GHOSTS takes place during Halloween, and is notable for the beautiful illustrations. The dedication, to a Zen teacher, sets the mystical tone for this ancient tale.
There are three books that are just fun for the little guys, and fun for us to read to them.

JEANNETTE CLAUS SAVES CHRISTMAS, by Douglas Rees, is a sweet little book that has Santa’s resourceful daughter saving the day when Dad gets a bad cold.
Popular children’s book author Cynthia Rylant has penned BROWNIE & PEARL SEE THE SIGHTS. Colorful pictures make this a fun gift for little ones who are pre-K.

Victoria Osteen is co-pastor, with her husband Joel, of the largest church in America. With GIFTS FROM THE HEART, she imparts a rhymed spiritual message aimed at Christian families.
Whatever books you decide to buy, remember that the greatest gift of all is the time you share reading together.
