A new kind of collar has appeared this season. Unlike the one on your purloined Brooks Brothers or Thomas Pink shirts or the one on your kid’s school uniforms, this model is decorative and detached. On runways and in shops at all levels of cost and in many different fabrications, these are worn instead of necklaces. Some are flush with crew neck sweaters and appear to be rising from beneath, others are worn with flesh between as if jewelry. They LOOK like collars, not chokers. Herein some of the wide variation out there.

Left: Sequin Peter Pan Collar Necklace- Soft, square sequins help this version lay flat against your cashmere sweater or upper chest. Casual sheen for adding a little kick to daytime clothes as well as trendy evenings. At $28.00, a good way to try the style without major investment.

Right: Z Designs Peter Pan Collar Necklace- This one’s configured like a necklace and being stiff metal, a bit more like jewelry. Wear with a round necked dress or blouse to accent something otherwise classically simple. The minimalist design works well for the office but will skew otherwise with large or elaborate earrings. Hammered Peter Pan collar 16”-18” long with lobster clasp. Gold or silver metal. $38.00

Trilby Collar Necklace

This, more pithy interpretation, will sit well on a big sweater or constructed blouse. On thin fabric, it will appear too heavy. Traditionally shaped, but unexpectedly made of silver metal, the piece cries out for a classicist with closet pizzazz. Measures 7” long from clasp to tip. Handmade in New York, the collar is rimmed with Swarovski crystals. $645.00

Black, of Course

Left: Kate Spade Plaza Athenee Collar- Travels from sweater sets to evening wear, though stops short at formal. Perfect for anyone drawn to vintage. Ladylike. Faceted resin and shiny 12 karat gold metal. 18”-20” long. Lobster claw closure. Several color choices. $298.00

Right: Handmade Vintage Style Pearl Collar- This pretty face frame is something you won’t see elsewhere. Looks like a real antique. Feminine and flirty. Wear with a strapless dress, or atop a white silk blouse with enormous sleeves. (pearl, black resin, crystal or filigree silver jewelry.) Artful and confident. Various pearls organized in color harmony on top of satin. Ribbon tie. $48.52

Another black interpretation- Karl Abbey Stand Up Faux Pearl Collar $115.00 (opening photo)

Dannijo Hilde Necklace

Autumnal colors and extremely interesting texture make this piece distinctive. Wear with your Ralph Lauren or Hilfiger country separates- great next to nubbly fabrics and tweeds. Will hold its own with an oversized sweater-try bronze or copper color. 60s inspired crystal laden Peter Pan Collar. About 16” long and 2” wide at thickest point. Handmade with Swarovski crystals. $745.00

Karl Amber Crystal and bead-embellished Cotton Collar

These have just the right amount of sparkle to be worn in daylight. Soft cotton against your neck. Button closure at the front. Wear with leather and tweeds, plaids and herringbones. $185.00
