Clothing Swap events are sweeping across the nation. Frugal fashionistas are looking to update their wardrobes, clean their closets, or simply save a little cash. Last summer I attended my first clothing swap in the swank Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. I was more than pleasantly surprised because I was expecting to see someone’s closet junk that the neighborhood Goodwill wouldn’t want to take. The hostess and her assistants were very polite and organized to the hilt. Everything from the clothing check-in process to entertaining the guest was taken care of with precision. I walked away with a cute summer dress, sterling silver cuff bracelet, straw purse, and a nice silk scarf. The clothing was in good condition and some pieces still had the original price tag! I have been hooked ever since and decided to host my own clothing swap.
Each swapper brings in clothes, shoes, and accessories they no longer want and then sift through the wares of swappers for pieces they will actually wear. Women peruse through countless racks according to sizes that can range from size 0-20. The best part is that it is FREE. However, some swaps collect a small contribution to go towards their charitable cause.
Women of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities came out to swap their closet goodies. Clothing swaps have become a great place to network and meet new friends. It is becoming a trendy new look at shopping infused with charity. Most swap parties have various themes and numerous charitable causes that they donate towards with care and compassion. breast cancer, domestic violence, and other women’s-related issues are among the most popular charities to contribute to.
The locations of these swaps are held at community centers, lounges, restaurants, and even nightclubs, making it ideal to mix and mingle. Clothing swaps sometimes even offer small businesses an opportunity to highlight their goods and services. Spa services and mini makeover turn grown women into giddy schoolgirls as they wait patiently to be pampered while sipping on free cocktails. Social clubs have even been created around clothing swaps for woman looking to spark new relationships.
Overall, I think clothing swaps are great for all budgets and backgrounds. They have even come up with National Swap Day on January 22, 2011. See you there!
