Five Surefire Summer Shade Styles

Gone are the days of drab eye protection and the ever-infamous Oakleys (and the even more repulsive Foakleys). 2011 is sunglass heaven for those who enjoy fun and funky. There are so many interesting options available, and certainly a style perfect for everyone under the sun.

I’ve found 5 styles that will not only protect you from UV rays, but will ensure that your eye-wear this summer is scorching hot.

Cats Eye

Cats Eye sunglasses are back this summer in a big way. This fifties throwback is flirty and feminine. This style was adopted by Elvira (opening photo) in the 80s film, Scarface giving her an effortlessly cool look, but also gave off an aura of detachment. Detachment, not so cool, but these shades are. Urban Outfitters has a classic pair of cats eye sunglasses for 10 bucks.

Circular

A little bit John Lennon and little bit Judge Doom (a la another 80s film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit), circular glasses are definitely different. But not so different anymore. They are gaining popularity at a rapid rate, and rightly so. They add a chic edge to a casual outfit, and the more avant-garde versions will spice up your look. The Row offers an appropriately named “Lennon” pair for $410.00

For the more bargain-minded, 80s purple offers a pair for $12.

Over-sized

Over-sized sunglasses will not only over-protect your eyes, but also will protect you from the camera flashes of paparazzi as this style drips with celebrity. Also a big plus for those who want to venture out prior to applying eye makeup. 80spurple.com has a pair called Jackie for only 12 bucks. Very Jackie O. and oh so glam in a BIG way.

Wayfarers

Wayfarers, the throwback to the 1980s iconic sunglasses have been a mega hit amongst the hipster crowd for the past few years. This year is no exception. The style is still going strong as they are classic in shape and flattering for most face types. You can pick up wayfarers almost anywhere that sells shades these days but take a look at the line of wayfarers made by Betsey Johnson including this lovely pair with all over hearts for $55.

Just plain bizarre

Perhaps they are Gaga inspired, or this year is all about experimentation. If you are feeling gutsy you really should take advantage of the many futuristic and eccentric pairs of shades currently available. Why not?
Take a look at these Linda Farrow mask sunglasses from across the pond.

This pair of “Robot” glasses are very Tron-ed out.

And these baroque scroll inspired mega shades by Prada have both elegance and extravagance.
