Holiday Shopping That Helps Victims of Cancer

This Saturday, not only will you be able to get some of your holiday shopping done, but you’ll be making a valuable contribution to a very worthy cause. On December 3rd, the small business community of 23rd Avenue in Astoria, Queens will be having a special event, Shop-A-Holiday On 23rd, from 12 pm to 5 pm, along 23rd Avenue from 31st Street to 24th Street, to benefit Shareing & Careing, a non-profit, Astoria-based cancer support organization.

Shareing & Careing was founded in 1994 by Astoria resident Anna Kril, a breast cancer survivor. The goal of the organization is to provide a full range of support services to all whose lives are impacted by breast and other cancers. They establish links with community health providers, host lectures and educational forums in the community as well as provide patient navigation, group and individual counseling, and other services. Their purpose is to dramatically improve medical services to all women and their families through early detection and treatment and by providing information about living with the effects of cancer.

For Shop-A-Holiday On 23rd, organizers with Shareing & Careing and Teddy’s Florist, will create holiday wreaths that celebrate life. Messages of hope will be placed on each wreath by volunteers from the charity during a workshop at the offices of Shareing & Careing. Each participating retailer from 23rd Avenue will display the event wreath for the month of December outside their store front.

This Saturday, the event will have everything shoppers could want, from fashion and home accessories to one of a kind items from local artists and specialty items for pets. Each participating retailer will also have exciting surprises exclusively for the day. What shoppers need to do is simply pick up a “Retail Passport” at any participating store and have it stamped by all seven stores in order to receive a celebratory event tote at KrisTEES, the last stop on the retail adventure. Inside the tote shoppers will find a holiday ornament especially created for the event, holiday promotions from businesses along 23rd Avenue, and a specially designed cookie by Dough & Batter for Shareing & Careing. The complimentary tote will be given as a thank you for participating and supporting not only local retailers, but this local charity.

Each of the seven participating retailers showcases something different at the event. The Jumping Bulldog offers everything and anything pet owners would want for the four-legged love of their lives. Belief is one of New York’s best full service skateboard shops. Creators’ Co-Op is a boutique that sells hand-made, unique items from local artists including fashion, accessories, art, and home goods. Fresh Start has a wide range of organic groceries, produce, and vitamins and herbs, as well as a vegan bakery. Rejuvenate Face & Body is a relaxing spa that offers a holistic and conscious approach to skin care, and all treatments are performed using only natural and organic products to provide a clean and non-toxic environment. Peter Valcarcel Home offers incredibly stylish decorating items for the home. And KrisTEES (see Woman Around Town’s previous article about KrisTEES here) is the place to go for the latest fashionable look.

These retailers will generously donate 10% from the sales of the day to Shareing & Careing and, in addition, they will have donation boxes located in their stores for the month of December. Volunteers from Shareing & Careing will be present to inform shoppers of their work and services in the community on the day of the event.
