The Huarache Hurries Back in Time for Summer

Huarache

By Susan Kleban

It seems that every twenty years or so the huarache reappears.  First made in Mexico as a fisherman’s sandal, the huarache became fashionable in the 1950’s, reemerging again in the 1970’s. For Summer 2009 this hand woven favorite is front and center in the world of high-end accessories.

Because the huarache is flat and molds to the foot the more it’s worn, it is the perfect comfortable summer sandal.  This season the huarache takes a glamorous turn and appears in a mid-heel version from Manolo Blahnik ($795), in beautiful metallics from Tory Burch ($250, shown above) and in natural leather adorned with chunky crystals from Aldo ($98).  Whatever your budget, wear huaraches with your favorite skinny jeans, gauzy beach pant, or sexy short shorts.

So we say Hooray for Huaraches!
