Continuing on my shopping excursion on U Street, my next stop is Lettie Gooch (1517 U Street, NW), another one of my favorite local clothing boutiques. Stocking the hottest new names in women’s and men’s apparel, shoes and accessories, the shop is named after owner Theresa Watt’s grandmother, and well-known among DC’s trendiest for bringing an urban New York vibe to the city long before H&M was a downtown mainstay.
A warm, street-level space with racks of women’s and men’s clothes stretched out along one wall, as well as handbags and accessories scattered like sculptures throughout, the atmosphere at Lettie Gooch is at once inviting and exciting. Offering a carefully edited selection of well-known brands along with emerging talents, such as Mixie, Eva Franco, Orion London, Hype, and Beth Bowley, Lettie Gooch is a must-shop for sexy party dresses, on-trend pants and tops, coats, and custom-made handbags. Each season, owner Watt’s goes to the shows in New York, LA and Las Vegas to scout new items for the store, and she’s just now getting ready to share her latest finds for early spring. Jewelry is bright, bold, and bountiful: a basket of cuff bracelets caught my eye with options in silver, pearl and colorful beads, as well as fun earrings, from dangles to hoops to studs. And for the man in your life, casual and dress shirts, denim – and even a Boyfriend Corner, complete with a comfy couch so he can wait in peace, and not make you feel rushed! Before leaving, don’t forget to head to the back of the store to check-out the sale rack, where I feel pretty confident you’ll find a great deal on dresses, sweaters, pants and tops, at an even more amazing price!
A closely-knit community shop, Lettie Gooch is strongly committed to the neighborhood and hosts numerous in-store events. When I stopped in to visit recently, manager Kenya told me about the Biggest Loser competition they have going on this month. Both customers and staff alike are competing to see who can lose the most weight, and each week the boutique hosts different exercise classes, such as yoga, African dance, etc., and fitness experts from local area gyms are also joining-in to help guide and inspire participants. Upcoming events include Gooch’s Anniversary celebration in April, sure to be a fabulous night of great shopping and good fun. If you haven’t yet found yourself browsing the beautiful wares at Lettie Gooch, make this week the time and head over to U Street. Not only are you sure to come away with one, two or maybe even more unique pieces, you will be starting a tradition that I’m sure you’ll want to repeat many times over. And after all, the groundhog did say Spring would be early this year; who needs a better excuse than that to shop?
