Tiny Hiney—Chic Fashion for the Playground Set

Baby-in-Black

Danya Minyan and Zipora McDougald met as mommies at a Playgroup in Portland, Oregon, April 2010. They got to talking, as mommies do, about sleep and play, food and clothing…for the kids. Both had been involved in event planning but were looking to do something entrepreneurial in order to remain hands-on parents. Among the many things the ladies found they had in common was an enthusiasm for dressing their children.

The third time they met, Zhipi (Zipora) brought up the idea for “Tiny Hiney.” It would be a high quality, fashion oriented baby and toddler’s clothing company with simple, chic, amusing, designs. A line offering pint-sized pizzaz. Danya has an MBA and both ladies are A-personality types. The duo immediately started developing a business plan.

Choosing to work with researched companies “who were quick in response and sent good samples,” a decision was made to manufacture burnout cotton items in California and Pima Cotton pieces in Peru, where the best Pima Cotton is available. Burnout is a weathering process which creates a vintage-soft-and-worn feel; no two items are exactly alike. The designs are heat-pressed on locally in Oregon, where tagless labels (comfort concern) are also applied. Everything can be cold water hand-washed in-side-out.

Danya and Zipora (left to right in photo above) agreed on a few wearable colors to start: white, black, brown and pink in basic silhouettes. Their tastes are thankfully similar. Rhinestones, lace, mohair flowers and studs are utilized to create a motorcycle, wings, a skull and crossbones, a longhorn, a bow, flowers… The reasonable price point helps open doors. They collaborated with professionals and created a really charming web site on their own (see for yourselves) and began making calls.

Six months after start-up, retailer as well as individual orders are coming in. Danya works mostly in marketing and Zipora in manufacturing. Each garment is carefully wrapped in brown tissue and mailed by one of the two principals…who work from their neighboring homes. Remember Diane Keaton in Baby Boom? These ladies are one up-they have supportive husbands! “Tiny Hiney” is learning to walk. Soon it will be climbing and running.

Note: Everything you see as short-sleeved comes as long-sleeved. Black, white and pink thermal shirts can be custom ordered in any design.
