Sometimes, the act of looking for something proves just enough of a nuisance to take the fun out of the activity, but sometimes it doesn’t. And one place where you definitely won’t be sorry you looked for is Upstairs on 7th. Originally housed inside the Touchstone Art Gallery on 7th Street, this small but amazing boutique is now located in the lobby of 555 12th Street NW and stocks a well-thought-out selection of eco-friendly and classically chic dresses, jackets, handbags, jewelry, accessories and candles. Owner Ricki
Peltzman, who started her career as a buyer for The Higbee Company in Cleveland, sources her merchandise with a specific eye towards women who want beautiful, timeless pieces, but would just as soon not have to slog through stack of mass-produced clothing found at most of today’s mainstream clothing retailers.
A self-proclaimed ‘shopping experience that is relaxed yet inspired’, the racks at Upstairs on 7th (also known as U7) are well-stocked with treasures from on-trend designers such as: Blanque, Linn by Lilith, Niche, Planet, Spirithouse, Ray Harris and Rundholz; and accessories from houses such as: Bosco, Catherine Zapp, Manouk, Peter M, Bai New York, Aura and Barbara du Jounge. With a firm commitment to the local community, each month, Ricky and U7 give back to area women in a variety of ways. Either a portion of sales are donated to local non-profits that support women and children, or, the boutique hosts special events to collect items needed by these non-profits, and Ricki is vehemently committed to maintaining her ties to the city. “There are so few local, women-owned business in DC; I want to do my part and I think it’s important to give back.”
Ricki’s philosophy of buying items that she herself would wear and pay retail for has served her well. On the day I visited, I saw a gorgeous red polyurethane hand bag with swag detailing and large shoulder straps that was just adorable; browsed in front of a table of gorgeous Linnea’s Lights soy-based, clean-burning candles. All are hand-made, hand-poured and thoughtfully detailed with a pack of matches tucked inside the lid. Scents available included Winter, Macintosh Apple, Moss, Sweet Grass, Fig Leaf and the most popular scent—seductive Cashmere. And don’t forget the jewelry.
Several large cases held rows and stacks of shiny, sexy and unique jewelry pieces that would make the perfect holiday gift for…well, just about anyone. Just as I was leaving, several clients stopped by to see what was new or browse, and Ricki greeted them all by name, proving that Upstairs on 7th is so much more than just a store. Upstairs on 7th is an experience that you will undoubtedly want to repeat. And with Thanksgiving just around the corner, seasonal holiday office parties, events, happy hours and galas around town will begin in earnest, so be sure to stop by for your pre-party outfit planning. Ricki and her staff will take good care of you and send you on your way primed and perfect, ready for wherever the night takes you.
Upstairs on 7th is located at 555 12th Street, NW, in the lobby. The shop is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on the first Saturday of the month from noon to 5 p.m. And for those fashion emergencies when you absolutely must shop, give Ricki a call; she may just open the store on Sunday.
