Creating a Home Office for Yourself

2022 has been the year of remote work going permanent. During the coronavirus and Covid-19 pandemic, many companies were forced to allow their teams to work from home, as governments around the world laid down rules determining who could leave their houses and who could not. Anyone besides essential workers was told to stay home in a bid to slow the spread of the virus. While many businesses were reluctant to allow this mode of work pre-pandemic, people working from home successfully over the course of months and even years before restrictions were dropped, caused many to change their minds. Home work has benefits for both sides. Workers don’t have to pay and spend time on commuting and parking and can work from their own, comfortable environment. Employers don’t have to fork out for costly commercial premises and overheads, increasing profit margin. But if you’re working from home, you need to set yourself up a home working space. Here are some tips that can guide this journey!

A Home Office Room

Ideally, if you have a spare room in your home, this should be used as a home office. Of course, if you don’t have a spare room, you can use a space you already have available to you, such as a dining table, a desk in your living room or a space somewhere else. However, a specific room for working in can help you to separate home and work life more easily and can also give you more privacy while you work if you live with others. It can reduce instances of family or friends walking into the back of important calls or presentations and it can also give you a quiet space to really focus in, free from distractions. Ideally, this room should have plenty of natural light, as this controls your body’s circadian rhythms and can help to perk you up and boost concentration during daytime working hours.

Furniture

Your home office is going to need furniture. The first item on your list should be a desk. A desk provides you with somewhere to work from, placing your laptop or computer and any other essentials you need in easy reaching distance. You can check Tylko’s desks for some good examples. Next, a chair. Sure, you can sit on any chair through the working day, but the best for you and your body is going to be an ergonomically designed chair. Spinny chairs tend to be favoured, as they allow you to move easily from side to side, reaching for items you may need while you’re working.

Storage

Having storage in your workspace is important too. Chances are, you need all sorts of items through your working day, whether that’s a notebook and pens to take notes or jot down thoughts, a calendar to schedule meetings and calls, somewhere to store contracts and documents or anything else. There are all sorts of office space storage options to meet your needs, from full blown filing cabinets for those who deal with a lot of paperwork to small, desktop document shelves to organise more commonly accessed paperwork. Pen pots, drawers and so much more can all come in handy!

These are just a few of the basics to focus on when creating your own home office. Each investment can make all the difference!
