What Is Coming To Broadway In 2023?

Every year a splendid variety of shows and musicals take to the stage in one of New York’s most famous districts, the Broadway Theatre District.

Even though we know the show must go on, they can’t possibly go on forever, which means that each year these shows are changing, and new tickets become available.

So, if you’re planning a trip to the theatre this year, you might be wondering what to see. If that’s the case, then you’ve come to the right place.

Below, we’ve put together a list of seven must-see plays and musicals showing on Broadway in 2023. Be sure to book your tickets today!

Chicago

Let’s kick off with one of the world’s best musicals, which also happens to be the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. It’s Chicago!

This gripping tale takes place inside a woman’s prison, following the story of Roxie Hart, a young woman who is on trial for her lover’s murder. Behind bars, she finds herself locked up with her idol, a singer by the name of Velma Kelly. When the two fight for the attention of charismatic lawyer Billy Flynn, things get interesting.

The show is the perfect combination of catchy show tunes and sizzling dance moves, with a storyline so exciting it’s almost criminal.

This Year, Chicago will be showing at the Ambassador Theatre between January and July. Due to some of the more adult themes addressed in the show, there is an age recommendation of 13 and over, though this is down to viewer discretion.

& Juliet

You’ve heard of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, but this is not the tragic old-timey tale of star-crossed lovers. No, Juliet is a Broadway musical sensation featuring modern classics by Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and many more.

This non-stop party sees Juliet take off on a European road trip with her gal pals as she tries to forget her ex, Romeo. But fate has a funny way of dealing with things. This musical is full of twists and turns, as well as catchy songs and incredible dance moves.

Having premiered in Manchester, UK, in 2019, this show is as fresh as it comes, and it’s clearly popular as it will be showing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre for the majority of 2023, running between January and November.

Hadestown

Based on Greek mythology, Anaïs Mitchell’s tale of love, fear and greed is an enchanting musical that quite literally takes viewers on a journey to hell and back. If you’ve not heard of Hadestown before, this show promises to be the world’s new musical obsession.

Through song and dance, the cast shares the story of two young lovers, Eurydice and Orpheus, who become a target of the evil King Hades. This is a spellbinding adventure that will have you gripped from the very start.

There is an age recommendation on this show of eight years or more, and this musical will be shown at the Walter Kerr Theatre between January and July.

A Doll’s House

Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain returns to Broadway in this thrilling take on a European classic. Chastain plays Nora, a seemingly happily married woman with a big secret. Cloaked in an illusion of domestic bliss, her life quickly begins to unravel, and her comfortable existence is under threat.

You will be shocked and gripped by director Jamie Lloyd’s take on this old tale. Remodelled and updated for a modern-day audience, this new version of A Doll’s House will be showing at the Hudson Theatre Between February and June this year.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a record-breaking show that has secured nine Olivier Awards, including Best New Play.

Having sold out theatres in London, it first came to Broadway in 2018 and reunited Harry Potter fans with some of their favourite characters 19 years after it first came out.

This show is a sequel to the seventh book and takes place in Harry’s adult years, now as a father of three and working at the Ministry of Magic. Along with his pals, he faces a slew of dark adventures brought to life on stage.

This time around, it will be showing at the Lyric Theatre, but as one of the most popular shows on Broadway, you better snap up your tickets fast! Although anyone can enjoy these wonderful wizarding adventures, some of the scenes are better suited to audiences aged ten or over.

Wicked

You’ve heard of the Wizard of Oz, but do you know how some of these key characters came to be?

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, this spellbinding musical tells the tale of the unlikely friendship between Glinda and Elphaba before they became known as Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively.

Wicked takes a sneak peek behind the curtain of female friendship and the fight to end prejudice, sweeping audiences away on an emotional journey. Featuring incredible songs like ‘Popular’ and ‘Defying Gravity’, you’ll sing, laugh and cry along with the cast as they transport you through the mystical Land of Oz.

This show has sold out theatres around the globe and has been nominated for 10 Tony Awards. Now on Broadway, it will be showing at the Gershwin Theatre between January and June.

Fat Ham

The final show on our list is Fat Ham, another modern take on a Shakespearean classic. However, this time it is a funny riff on Hamlet.

The lead, a queer college student named Juicy, is already dealing with the usual teenage angst alongside some pretty heavy questions about his identity. So when the ghost of his dad shows up demanding he gets revenge on his wicked uncle, his life goes into a tailspin.

Trying to juggle love, loss and joy, you’ll be taken on a hilarious journey of discovery that has had audiences jumping for joy. Kicking off in March 2023, Fat Ham will show at the American Airlines Theatre until June.
