Around the Internet: Stories You Should Read
With so much on the internet and in your daily feed, it’s easy to miss important stories. Woman Around Town is launching a new feature that will flag stories of interest.
Here’s what we found this week:
Disney Says Man Can’t Sue Over Wife’s Death. (NBC News)
After his wife died from an allergic reaction to food she consumed at a Disney restaurant, Jeffrey J. Piccolo filed a lawsuit. Disney is pushing back, saying Piccolo signed up for a Disney+ account several years ago. That agreement included a section saying: “any dispute between you and us, except for small claims, is subject to a class action waiver and must be resolved by individual binding arbitration.”
Gray Hair, Huge Muscles: Why Older Women are Bulking Up (Wall Street Journal)
This one definitely caught our eye! Women signing up to learn Olympic weightlifting! This is a new playbook for keeping in shape, adding muscle, and losing weight. Time to leave the Peloton and hit the barbells!
Trump Keeps Dancing as Artists Are Outraged Over the Use of Their Songs (USA Today)
So far the Village People have not objected to Trump using their song, “YMCA”, at his rallies. Other artists are not so reluctant to express their outrage. Issac Hayes’ estate has threatened to sue over the disgraced ex-president’s use of “Hold On, I’m Coming,’” while Celine Dion is upset he’s been using “My Heart Will Go On.” Note: Celine’s song from Titanic is about a shipwreck, so maybe it’s apropos.
Deadpool and Wolverine Becomes Top-Grossing R-Rated Pic of All Time (Hollywood Reporter)
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are riding a juggernaut. Their superhero film from Marvel and Disney is crashing the global box office. At a time when Hollywood is struggling to get back to pre-pandemic levels, this action film – with lots of humor – is maybe a sign that the box office is recovering.
Donald Trump Made $300,000 for Endorsing a Bible, a Financial Disclosure Shows. (New York Times)
In Donald Trump’s world, everything is for sale, even the Holy Bible. One, of course, that bears his signature. But even that tacky sale won’t erase the huge debt he carries resulting from his legal troubles. Maybe he needs to pray more and sell less.
The Surprising Truth About Loneliness in America (Vox)
It’s not just the elderly who experience loneliness. No one, it seems, is immune to feeling isolated and alone. The U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called loneliness a “public health crisis.” But there are ways to help yourself and others.
