Right: The Jewish Museum Hagenauer Menorah: Karl Hagenauer designed the original lamp, which is in the Jewish Museum’s permanent collection, between 1919 and 1928. Hagenauer studied with modernist pioneer Josef Hoffman at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. He became a designer and manager at the Werkstatte Hagenauer, an important producer of Viennese metallic arts begun by his father, Carl. The original lamp was cast in copper alloy, known as Vienna bronze or brass. This adaptation is produced in cooperation with Galerie Hagenauer in Vienna, Austria. Made in the USA. Opening: Large Tree of Life Menorah by Liz Lauter: This folk-art inspired, terracotta one-of-a-kind menorah is handmade by Liz Lauter in her ceramic studio in California. Clay sculpted flowers and leaves wrap around the front and back of the tall, looping arms. White doves and pomegranates dangle from wires off the arms. Assorted songbirds sit among the flowers. The cups at the top of the menorah are shaped like tulips.
Liz Lauter is a ceramicist working out of California. Her ceramic Judaica is inspired by a fusion of Mexican folk-art tree of life candelabras, Italian majolica ceramics and her personal passion for botany. Each piece is hand sculpted from earthenware terracotta clay and special wire and fired in the kiln. The piece is then dipped in a white opaque “majolica” glaze and hand-painted with ceramic glaze colors from Italy. Fits Shabbat candles, not traditional Hanukkah candles. Made in California.
