Ilaria Mariani – The Magical Art of a Contemporary Italian Hat Maker

Federica Di Cintio shines a spotlight on an emerging talent, Ilaria Mariani, whose art draws from the worlds of painting and craftsmanship combined with the ancient art of the hat makers. And it’s through a sensory journey of smells, shapes, and emotions that she gives life to her hats created in Roversano, in the Emilia-Romagna area of Italy.
Ilaria, tell me something about yourself, your background and how you founded your brand. I’ve read an interesting story about a hat maker in London who played a relevant role in helping you develop your art.
I am a milliner and artisan. My professional path has been anything but linear. I started in the world of banking, economics, and finance, but I felt a deep need to express myself in a more creative and authentic way. So I began painting, and from there “The Alchemist” was born, my space dedicated to art. However, hats have always played a special role in my life. Since I was a child, I’ve collected hats, seeing them not just as an accessory, but as true “superpowers” capable of transforming a person, changing their attitude and perception of themselves. I lived in London between my first and second degree, a place with a millennia-long tradition of hat makers and artisans, and it was there that the spark was ignited, driving me to dive deeper into the world of millinery. Over the years, I have had various formative experiences in Italy, where I studied with a master milliner who lives in England, an encounter that cemented my passion for this craft. From this fusion of art, tradition, and passion, im___hats was born, my brand that personally and innovatively interprets the tradition of the hat, creating unique pieces that tell stories, evoke emotions, and carry a strong artisanal identity.

I’ve looked at your Instagram posts and I’ve been transported into your world made of smells, sounds, and imaginary scenarios related to the American cowboy culture. How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process is a sensory, instinctive, and immersive journey. I draw inspiration from each material, color, texture, and the story I want to tell through my hats. Every creation starts with a vision, but it evolves and takes shape in a continuous dialogue between the idea and reality, between what I imagine and what materializes in my hands. I am fascinated by the possibility of combining unexpected elements, always pushing the boundaries of tradition. Every hat is a unique piece that arises from experimentation and innovation, but there is one particular aspect that is fundamental for me: the sensory power. Beyond the visual aspect, I love creating a complete experience that also engages the sense of smell and energy. In fact, I create perfumes and vibrational incense to “scent” the hats, a ritual that strengthens the connection between the object and the person who wears it. Each hat tells a story that doesn’t stop at its outward appearance, but extends into the sensory realm, transforming the act of wearing it into an experience that engages all the senses.
Looking at your creations, I immediately had the feeling that each and every hat is a piece of art. Are your creations made in Italy? Please, tell us something more about this topic.
Yes, every hat is entirely handmade in Italy, using the highest quality materials and techniques passed down through generations. The craftsmanship is essential for me, not just as part of the process, but as a philosophy: each hat is meant to convey authenticity, as a unique piece that carries its own soul. Italy, with its long tradition of fashion and craftsmanship, is the beating heart of everything I do. I am proud to be part of this tradition, but also to keep it alive through my work. I live in an ancient 1200s castle, where I have my workshop. It’s a place that breathes history and creativity, where each hat comes to life, fueled by the magic of a space that unites the past and the present, art and craftsmanship. Every creation born here is a tribute to that timeless tradition.

I’ve noticed that your collections display different hat shapes and sizes. What’s the role of the crown in the hat?
The crown is the element that defines the true personality of a hat. It is like the heartbeat of every creation, capable of transmitting elegance, strength, rebellion, or lightness, depending on its shape and height. Its tilt, height, and proportions all play a fundamental role in the character the hat assumes. I love experimenting with the dimensions and heights of the crown, to make each hat unique, creating a deep connection between the wearer and the message they want to communicate. The hats I most love to create are the Big B, with crowns over 20 cm. They are like mountains to climb, challenges to face. These hats have an audacious soul, they are protagonists that cannot go unnoticed. Each Big B is a journey, a conquest of forms and sizes that go beyond limits, for those who are not afraid to express their strength and uniqueness.
Is there a signature piece or style in your collections? Do you have a favorite one?
Each hat is unique and has its own story, but some creations hold a special place in my heart. I particularly love the Big B models, which are among the boldest and most structured, and some of the burned hats decorated with symbolic elements

The Big B Burn and the Walker, just to mention a few, are one-of- a kind-pieces of art. How would you style them?
The Big B Burn has a strong and rebellious soul: I imagine it worn with a rock look, perhaps a deconstructed masculine suit or a flowing dress to create contrast. The Walker, on the other hand, has a more essential elegance: I see it as perfect for minimalist outfits and clean lines, for those who want a touch of character without excess.
What would you say to people feeling that wearing a hat could make them look too much?
A hat is an extension of one’s personality, not an excess. It’s all about finding the right shape and style that makes you feel comfortable. A hat is a powerful accessory, capable of transforming a look and boosting confidence. Once you try it, it becomes hard to do without!
Let’s play a little bit! You see four people: the first one wears a high crown hat, the second one a low crown, the third a wide brim and the forth, a narrow brim. Try to make an identikit of their personalities from the shape of their hats.
• High crown ? A confident person, who loves to stand out. • Low crown ? Simple and elegant, discreet but with class. • Wide brim ? A dreamer, a bit bohemian, loves scenic details. • Narrow brim ? Practical and dynamic, with a clean and determined style.

I know that you won the “Premio internazionale Michelangelo.” Tell us something more about this prize and other projects you’ve been involved in.
The Michelangelo International Award was an important recognition for my artistic journey. Alongside hats, I continue painting and exploring new ways to express my creativity, merging art and craftsmanship.
I’ve read on your internet site that you give your clients the opportunity to have a customized hat. How does that work?
I offer my clients the opportunity to create custom hats, choosing the shape, materials, and details. I like to involve them in the process, so that each piece also tells their own story and personality. I have the chance to connect with them, even without having them physically in the workshop, and I am grateful for the human connections that are formed as a result.
Your Instagram page displays a link to @the_alchemist_ , what does it refer to?
It’s my page dedicated to painting and art. Before dedicating myself to millinery, I started by painting, and that part of me is still alive. “The Alchemist” is my space to experiment with colors, shapes, and emotions on canvas.
Are you planning to open a flagship store?
The idea of opening a flagship store really fascinates me! For now, I am focusing on growing the brand and expanding my world, but in the future, I would love to have a physical space where people can fully immerse themselves in the experience of my hats and my artistic vision. A place where each customer can feel like the protagonist of a unique and personalized experience.
