How can you ensure you’re doing the best for your children? The short answer is that you do your best. But, it’s more complicated than that because sometimes your best is less than other days, right? It’s not easy raising kids, we know that, but it’s important that you understand that it’s your job to take care of them through everything. When you’re tired, you’ve got to be there. When you’re sick, you’ve got to be there. You are their rock, and they need you. So, how can you ensure that you’re doing the best for them? Let’s take a look at some of the things that show you are on the right track.

Show Up

On the list at number one we’ve got that you need to show up. This is probably the most important thing that we are going to say in this article, because this is the most important thing to kids. They need a parent that shows up, every day, no matter how hard it gets, or how tough things are, you need to show up. Being there for your kids is more important than any material item that you could give them.

There are some parents out there who are busy and just throw their credit cards at their kids, but this cannot make up for the fact that you are not there. Seeing your parents at your extra curricular activities for example, knowing that they are going to come to every sports event or art show possible means the world to kids. It helps them develop a healthy relationship with you, and sets the foundations for them to develop healthy relationships with others.

Encourage Open Communication

There are a lot of kids out there who do not feel as though they can talk to their parents about certain things. This is not the kind of environment that you want to foster in your home. It’s important that you are encouraging open communication between you and your children about everything. They need to know that you are a safe space for them, but that if they do things wrong that there are going to be consequences. However, these can be given without shouting, shaming, and humiliating your child because they told you the truth.

The simple fact of life is that there are going to be times where your child tells you something that you do not like, or that you do not agree with. The only thing that you can do is deal with it and then move forward. You need to speak respectfully, hear what they are saying to you, and ensure that you are communicating back in a positive way.

Listen To Their Wants And Needs

In the same vein as what we just mentioned, you need to ensure that you are listening to the wants and needs of your children. It doesn’t matter how old they are, it’s important that you are actively listening to understand, not just to reply. When we listen to reply, we often miss half of the things that are being said, and this is not something that you want to happen. For example, if your child is trying to tell you that there is something that they like or that they are interested in, you need to try and show some kind of interest in that. This is not to say that you have to become obsessed with it or anything, but you do need to put some effort in to connect with your child.

An example of this would be when prom time comes around when they are teenagers. This is a hugely important part of their teenage years, and you need to listen to what they want. Perhaps they want to tell you about the beautiful graduation dresses that they have seen and they would like you to go with them. Or, maybe they want something else from you. Whatever it is, you need to listen as you would expect them to listen to you.

Help Them With Academics

Some parents put a massive focus on academics and getting good grades. We can understand why getting good grades would be important to people as they help you in the future, but there is more to life than the results of an exam. Yes, academics are important, but your child can only do their best and that is all that you should want from them. The best thing that you can do if they are struggling is set aside some time to sit down with them and help them as much as you can. If the topic is beyond your knowledge then perhaps hiring a tutor would be the best way to go about this.

The thing that you want to avoid is putting a crushing amount of pressure on this. Instead of helping your kids to achieve, this can have the opposite impact and end up causing them more problems. It can also present more problems later down the line, where your children think that they have to be perfect in everything in order to be worth something, which is not what you want.

Ensure They Have A Hobby

Having a hobby is massively essential for a number of things like mental health, and social development. As such, you should ensure that your kids have at least one hobby from the time they are little. This is not to say that they have to have hobbies 5 days per week and they have to be the best in all of them. Whatever they choose should be something that they enjoy, and something that brings them happiness. Ideally, if you can get them to do one sport, and one creative hobby, this is likely going to be best for them, as they will become a well-rounded person.

However, it’s not always easy to find things that kids like. It’s okay if they want to go through a few different hobbies until they find the one that they like, and you should be supportive of this. They might even decide that they want to take up a hobby that you have and you can share this together.

Stay Involved With Their Passions

As their parent, you should try to be involved in their life as much as you can without being overbearing. You don’t want to insert yourself in too much, but you also want to make sure that you know what they are into, the things that they like and if they let you get involved that’s even better. If you can stay up to date with these, then you can help guide them if they need it, you can buy them things that they may need and so much more. Staying involved with the things that they love will help there be a strong bond between you which is exactly what you want.

Teach Them Basic Life Skills

It’s important that you are teaching them basic life skills so that when they go out into the world, they know how to do these basic things. This is going to include things like doing their own laundry, cooking their own meals even if they are basic ones, budgeting the money that they have and anything else that you consider a basic life skill. At the very least, when your children leave home they should be able to clean, bathe, and feed themselves without the help of someone else. If they can’t do these things, then they are going to struggle in life.

Be The Parent You Always Wanted

The final thing that we are going to say is aimed at those people who didn’t have the best parents growing up. The best thing that you can do for your children is to be the parent that you always wanted when you were getting older, as this is the parent that your kids are going to want too. It’s very easy to fall into patterns that are not healthy, or that are just convenient even if they are not the best, but you have got to fight this.

Think about that smaller version of you, and think about the things that you thought would make a great parent in your eyes. Try to be what you wanted in life, and that should be enough to make sure you are doing the best for your kids.

Being a parent is about doing what you think is best for your kids as often as you can, so that’s really all that you can do. At the end of the day, your best is going to have to be enough, but if you know that you are struggling a bit then it’s okay to ask for help. You do not have to be a strong parent who gets it right all of the time, you just have to try. Being there for your kids is the number one thing that you need to do, so as long as you are doing that, you’re doing better than a lot of parents out there.
