Poet’s Corner – The Other Shoe
This is such a good place to be, this now.
This time in my life if I close my eyes
to the encroaching world at my edges,
it’s good now and it has been for a surprising
stretch of time. It makes me uncomfortable.
Ordinary happiness, I can’t find my place in it.
But I’m trying to say thank you for these small blooms
of joy and unnerving moments of peace and contentment.
Didn’t I try for this all these years? All the prayers,
meditations, reading and writing practices, getting clear,
all that effort for the resulting feeling of a happiness
I’m suspicious of. And why not? The world will break
everyone’s heart sooner or later, it’s already shredded
mine a couple of times. But this strange gift of age
sweetens the hours. I may still feel like I’m waiting
for the other shoe to drop, but maybe when
whatever comes – as it will, I’ll know
how to dance barefoot.
