The Types of Secondhand Stores in New York City

The sustainability movement has proved to be a boon for shops that offer secondhand goods. But deciding which type of store suits your needs can be tricky. Here is a breakdown of the key differences between thrift stores, charity shops, vintage shops, resale shops, and consignment shops.

Thrift Stores
These are typically nonprofit and benefit a particular cause or charity. They rely on donations of clothing, furniture, home goods, books, toys, and other items. If you plan to donate, check on when those items are accepted and if there are any restrictions for what might not be accepted. From the website, you can also arrange for donated items to be picked up. Prices in thrift shops are usually very low and sometimes can be negotiated. Items are not curated for value, but smart shoppers may unearth a treasure that could be worth real money. Funds collected go towards the charity’s cause.

Charity Shop
Trendier than a traditional thrift store, charity shops present curated items that may be repaired, cleaned, and presented in an appealing manner to encourage shoppers to buy. All proceeds go towards a specific cause. Housing works, for example, focuses on helping people living with HIV/AIDS.

Vintage Shops
These outlets are for serious collectors or just someone looking for something that may be old, but will never go out of style. Prices will fluctuate depending upon the age and condition of the item. Love the roaring twenties? Then look for a beaded purse or an art deco necklace. But you don’t have to go that far back to shop vintage. These are stores that specialize in 70s bohemian dresses, 90s band tees, or designer clothing from the houses of Oscar de la Renta or Chanel.

Resale Shops
These shops are for-profit businesses that buy and resell secondhand goods. They often focus on current or in-demand items like clothing, handbags, and homeware. Price points are mid-range, less expensive than new retail, but higher than thrift. If you have something you’d like to sell, these shops may purchase on the spot for cash or credit.

Consignment Shops
Selling items on behalf of the owner is the focus of consignment shops. They accept brand-name or designer items that are in good condition. Prices will vary depending upon the brand and condition. The owner gets paid only when the item sells. Check to see whether you will need an appointment before visiting with your goods.
