My Career Choice: Katherine Salyi – Nest Seekers International
New York native Katherine Salyi’s family believes that hard work leads to success. After graduating from George Washington University, she began her career in real estate as an executive assistant in title insurance, advancing to positions as a title officer, escrow officer, and assistant vice president, underwriting international residential and commercial properties for U.S. buyers. As the title market changed with the financial crisis in 2008, Katherine moved into consulting for large banks.
This evolution of her career led her into real estate sales. She met Million Dollar Listing New York star Ryan Serhant while showing her first listing. Serhant was impressed with Katherine’s professionalism and work ethic and recruited her to join his team. Since then, the two lead the most successful real estate team in New York State with $375 million dollars in sales in 2014 and over $600 million dollars in sales in 2015.
Katherine, wife to Josh and mother to Julianna, is motivated by the energy of New York City. She believes that giving back is a necessity and is involved with several non-profit organizations including Mama Swappies, Little Swappies, Big City Moms, and Dress for Success.
Can you point to one event that triggered your interest in your career?
I entered the real estate industry in 2000 when I graduated from college. It was by chance – a family friend knew of an entry-level position! Since then, I’ve taken ownership of the opportunity and held various roles in the industry. Getting my real estate license in 2012 was a natural next step.
What about real estate did you find most appealing?
I love helping people find their perfect new home or achieve their goals when selling – it’s challenging and very rewarding. As a mother, I appreciate the flexibility of the workday that allows me to do my best at work and be as present as possible when I’m at home.
What steps did you take to begin your education or training?
While I was going to real estate licensing school, I took a modest job as a receptionist in a small real estate firm downtown. It allowed me to learn the ins and outs of residential real estate, and eventually led to my first sale!
Along the way, were people encouraging or discouraging?
Encouraging. It was a bold move to leave a good-paying job and essentially start my own business, but everyone knew I if I put my mind and energy into it that I could succeed.
Did you ever doubt your decision and attempt a career change?
Yes! It is a lot of work to build a client and referral base. In the beginning it was slow and challenging but I work hard, I’m focused and now I love every day!
When did your career reach a tipping point?
I don’t think I’m there yet! Since becoming a real estate broker in New York City I’ve reached several milestones and successes but I feel I have a lot more to accomplish.
Can you describe a challenge you had to overcome?
Every day is a challenge in customer service. With every deal there are hiccups to overcome, and I guide buyers or sellers through the process. Real estate brokers wear a lot of hats, and I do my best to provide unparalleled service in a professional and friendly way!
What single skill has proven to be most useful?
Being organized. I juggle a hectic schedule each day, both at home and at work. It’s very important to manage my time in the most efficient and productive way possible.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Nothing is better than receiving a referral from a client. It’s a true compliment.
Any advice for others entering your profession?
Never give up, work hard and keep a list of everyone you meet.
