Has Technology Really Made Our Lives Worse?

If there’s one thing that you can say for sure about the modern world, it’s that technology is one of the most fundamental parts of it. Technology has become central to so many aspects of our lives that it can often feel impossible to escape it. This has led a lot of people to decide that technology is too significant a force in our lives and that it just ends up causing problems for us all. A lot of the time people don’t necessarily know if this is the case, but the rise of technology is new and different and that means that it can be scary for a lot of people. And when something is new and scary, a lot of people will decry it no matter what. People will say that technology is ruining so many aspects of life from communication to art to family life. But the truth is that that’s just not the case. The reality is that things aren’t any worse now than they have been before and it’s certainly not the fault of technology. In reality, technology has been one of the most positive forces in many people’s lives. With that in mind, here are just a few ways that technology has changed many peoples lives for the better.

Business

There are few things more enticing to a lot of people than the idea of being able to break out of the day-to-day work structure and do something that they really love. However, for the longest time, this has essentially been little more than a fantasy for most people. Starting a business of your own has always taken a lot of work and resources. However, in the digital age, starting your own business really has never been so easy. Even the smallest business has the chance to connect with the resources they need to succeed, from Shopify Plus developers to branding and marketing experts, it’s incredibly easy to reach out to the kinds of people who can help you make your business great. Not only that but thanks to things like social media, it’s never been so easy to connect with potential customers. For a long time, big businesses would force smaller ones out of the limelight but that is changing all the time thanks to the tools that technology is providing to startups and home businesses.

Medicine

Let’s face it, anyone who says that things were better back in “the good old days” probably wouldn’t want to go back to kind of medical treatment people used to get. With every new technological advancement, the medical industry has pushed forward to find new ways to both save lives and to make them better for everyone. Whether it’s research, surgery, administration or patient care, there is no part of modern medicine that hasn’t been improved by technology. It’s even possible to create entire bones, organs, and tissue using 3D printing. While the technology isn’t being widely used yet, it’s a good sign of just what sort of exciting things there are still to come in the future. Medicine isn’t even the only place that the amazing technology behind 3D printing is being used; there are a lot of 3d printing case studies that show just how this extraordinary new tech is being applied.

Communication

A lot of people seem to decry the rise in technology for how it has disconnected us from each other. People bring up the image of people all glued to their phones, not even bothering to talk to each other. And sure, if you’re trying to talk to someone and they won’t get off Twitter, that’s pretty annoying, but to say that technology has made us worse at communicating is just ridiculous! Thanks to technology, it has never been so easy to communicate with people no matter what. You could be on the other side of the world as someone and thanks to instant messaging services and video conference software, you’re able to talk to them at any time. This is something that more and more people have realised in recent months as they’ve been stuck at home. Technology can be an incredibly valuable tool for staying in touch with the people who are most important to you.

Knowledge

Remember when you were younger and your teachers would say “do you really think you’ll have a calculator with you everywhere you go?” Boy, if they could see people now! Not only does just about every single person carry a calculator with them at all times, but they also carry something vastly superior to a calculator! With modern smartphones, almost the entire sum of human knowledge is right at your fingertips. It’s never been easier to learn or understand something. Things like Google and Youtube mean that whatever subject you’re interested in, you’re never more than a few clicks away from being able to find out everything you ever wanted to know about it. Not only that but there are so many different ways to finding that information that no matter what style of learning is best for you, you’ll probably be able to find something suitable.

The reality is this, technology is a neutral thing. After all, technology can’t think. It doesn’t have thoughts or opinions. Fundamentally, technology is just a tool for us to use that isn’t good or bad. The impact that technology has on your life comes down entirely to what you choose to do with it. If you reach a point where you’re depending on technology and letting it take over your life, that’s not the fault of technology. If someone is spending all day every day glued to their phone, that’s not the phone’s fault. The truth is that as technology becomes more advanced, the more important it becomes to treat it with a certain sense of responsibility. If we are able to do that, there really is no telling the kinds of amazing things that we will be able to do with technology to improve the lives of people all over the world.
