Pre-appointment Consultations: Why Are They So Important?

Many women (and men!) will have had a wax at some point in their lives. Whether it’s before going on holiday, before a big event or simply to avoid ingrown hairs, often waxing is a key part of many people’s pampering process.

But did you know that as important as the waxing appointment itself is the pre-appointment consultation? To find out why, read on.

Why is a consultation vital?

For the treatment to be successful and for the client to walk away happy, a consultation is crucial. Waxing isn’t a one-size-fits all solution to hair removal, so the more you can get to know your client, the better.

If a client has had a bad experience waxing before, a consultation will give you the opportunity to reassure them that the treatment will be as smooth and pain-free as possible. You can also advise on the treatment, ask about any allergies and invite them in for a patch test if they are a new client.

What information to gather as part of the consultation?

If you’re wondering what information you’ll need to gather from your potential clients, fear not! We’ve broken down everything you need to know for a smooth (literally!) consultation.

  1. Personal details

Firstly, you should look to gather some personal details. By having their phone number, name, age and email address, you can get in touch quickly if you need to re-schedule for any reason.

  • Their medical history

According to Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, the number of people with allergies in the UK is rising by 5% each year. Therefore, it’s crucial that you get their medical history on file, including any allergies. That way, you can use products that don’t contain any known allergens.

Furthermore, you should also try to ascertain whether clients have any skin conditions such as eczema, so you can use the correct products.

  • Their skin type

Different skin types will respond better to different types of wax, so it’s important to gather this information during the consultation. If a client has sensitive skin, a hot waxing kit may be more appropriate to use

  • Their hair removal history

Waxing nightmares do happen. So, it’s important to find out if your client has had any precious reactions to waxing. From skin burns to extreme pain or discomfort, it’s vital you understand if anything has gone wrong.

If it’s the client’s first wax, you should also make sure they are aware of how long the hair must be and any aftercare advice.

  • Expectations

Finally, you’ll need to find out their expectations and what they would like to see from the wax. By ensuring the client’s expectations are managed and you are aligned, this will avoid any unhappy customers.

Final thoughts…

Whether you’ve been waxing for years or you’re new to the game, getting new clients onboard can be nerve wracking. However, the good news is that by conducting a thorough consultation prior to an appointment, you can ensure your customers arrive knowing what to expect and leave happy.
