The Best Hiking Routes in Austria

To keep fit and healthy, it’s recommended to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. And what better way to do so than a good, old-fashioned hike?

If you’re keen to see the world and get fit at the same time, you might be considering Austria as your next hiking location. With some of the world’s most stunning scenery, you’ll find themed hikes in virtually every region. Whether you’re wanting a long, challenging hike or something family-friendly, here are some of the best hikes in Austria.

  1. Salzburger Almenweg

First up is the Salzburger Almenweg. Suitable for novice hikers, the Salzburger Almenweg is a 350km long trail that weaves through the Pongau mountains and alpine meadows in Salzburg. Although it’s a long trail, you certainly won’t get bored of this hiking route. With every alpine meadow being unique, you’ll have plenty to see as you go on your merry way.

As the route is divided into different levels of difficulty, it’s great for families too. If you fancy bringing beloved Fido with you, many of the huts along the way are pooch-friendly.

  • Austrian Stubi Valley

One of the best options for a walking holiday in Austria is the Stubi Valley trail. With breathtaking scenery during every season, the Austrian Tyrol region has a lot to offer.

Leading over an altitude of 5,000 meters, this 90km trail traverses around the always-beautiful Stubi Valley. As you walk across the mountaintops, you’ll be able to witness the wonderful glaciers as you pass by.

As this trail is classified as a black mountain path, it can be a challenging walk at times. So, it’s important to have the right equipment, some sturdy boots and a good level of cardiovascular fitness!

  • Berliner Höhenweg

Also known as the Zillertaler Runde, the Berliner Höhenweg is the ideal hiking route for experienced hikers looking for a challenge. Encompassing some steep hills, snow fields and rocky terrain, this alpine route isn’t for the faint-hearted.

  • The Peter Habeler Runde in Zillertal

Finally, there’s the Peter Habeler Runde in Zillertal. Renowned as one of the most beautiful crossings in the Eastern Alps, this protected region is as picturesque as it gets. Breathe in the stunning alpine landscape as you spot the marmots and ibexes. Then head to your hut for a taste of true alpine life. Bliss!

So now all that’s left to do is join the 19 million Brits that take a trip overseas each year and lace up your walking boots – it’s time for a hike in Austria.
